* 30/06/08 * Hi everyone. the Winter Solstice was last weekend, so the shortest day of the year has now passed. Nutrition-wise, it is a perfect time to eat oranges as they are in season just when extra Vitamin C is required. It may be better to eat an orange rather than juice it, as the fibres are valuable too! * Lately I've started sleeping without a cushion as a way of aligning my spine. By lying on my back, this position seems to me to be the best way to flatten my back, neck, shoulders, and chest. The big arch under the neck that a cushion creates seems to me to be quite unideal, especially long-term. Anyone else have an opinion? * If anyone has a flu or cold, light and easy Sun Salutes in the morning are good ways to clear the illness, especially as they stimulate the metabolism to encourage the body to clear itself. These are also Preventative! * Also, going bare footed as often as possible is a great way to keep the body well-aired. The pores in the soles of the feet need to breathe, for a healthy body. Then, the body can regulate its own temperature in a more balanced way. * JODY THE NUTTY NUTRITIONIST! Thanks to Jody who will be a regular writer on Nutrition. Click Here for her article: "What's in the Markets this Month" * DOCTOR QU'AC "Dear Doctor Qu'ac, can you talk about the way some people use Ganja (Marijuana) as a way of generating Shiva Consciousness, and whether this is appropriate or not?" (From Yosefine). Doctor Qu'ac says: Well! Thank you Yosefine for such a random obscure question! I may just be a good authority to talk on such matters! The concept of Shiva as the Father of Yoga is well known, and also the enegetic Shiva/Shakti philosophies talk of Kundalini energy being expressed and harnessed according to different scenarios. In India, there is a rather amusing anecdote about Shiva - in some scripture or image - holding or eating marijuana (Bhang). And in the designated Shiva cities of India, such as Varanasi or Pushkar, it is legal to buy and use a marajuana derivative drug caled Bhang. This industry is regulated by the Government, and there are designated Govt. Bhang shops! (If it's good enough for Shiva, it must be right, right?) Monday is Shiva day, and it always felt to me that half the city was very casually relaxed on this day (the half meaning most of the men!). From a Yogic perspective, there is one meditative practice - perhaps Ayurvedic - that recommends eating a very small amount of Bhang (best described as a marijuana opiate) - having fasted beforehand - and then the aspirant should bathe, go to the toilet, and then start meditating. Well being the good student and using information and heresay creatively I tried this myself. And I must admit it was one of the best experiences I've ever had. That's why I tried it a few times! I would walk to the market after Yoga, mix the Bhang with some Curd, (sugar is unwise here) and then walk home after eating. Midway through the shower the sensitivity in my nerves had heightened and by the time I was on the rooftop doing Tai-Chi I was inside a sensual dream. This was an amazing experience, eyes closed, moving through space feeling the wind against my skin. Quite simply, I never did poses as well as on these days, I have never unlocked my body to such a degree. I made some incredible breakthroughs in my understanding of Prana, Mind, and the body; I was able to understand and speak Hindi on the streets much more fluently; I recorded myself singing scales an octave higher than ever before; and one day I went to my Tabla (drumming) teacher to check if I was playing better ...which he begrudgingly agreed I was. The drawbacks were exhaustion, anxiety the next day, and a feeling that I did not have anyone to relate to. All in all, as a growth experience relative to Shiva Consciousness, I can say it went perfectly. I learned a great deal. It was also fun. My teacher would often say that life is to be enjoyed.
